Recently, the noise level on workplace culture has been raised several decibels. I might even argue that it is louder than tangible perks for job seekers who have been burned by a cultural void. Culturally aware Founders and CEOs often lament the time spent learning the hard way why they can’t afford to neglect company culture. And then they blog. My favorite lessons learned posts:
1. Rand Fishkin, Co-Founder of SEOmoz – What Company Culture IS and IS NOT – an honest look at how Rand defines culture for SEOmoz and highlights a few disturbing practices that are rearing their ugly heads on the hiring scene
2. Elad Gil, Entrepreneur, Advisor, Investor – Never, Ever Compromise: Hiring for Culture Fit – see 7.B. “Hire a good percentage of women early” is an excellent and rare nod to the importance of including women in traditionally male dominated landscapes
3. Evan Hamilton, Head of Community at UserVoice – Tacos and discouraging company culture – A tale of how one CEO failed to recognize waning company morale as a result of his cultural incompetence
Have you delved into culture development at work? I’d like to hear your story about what prompted you to take a closer look at culture and how it has changed your work environment. Take a stab at it, send me your thoughts and I’ll highlight my favorites in a blog post!
