If you live on planet earth and pay half attention to the news, you have probably heard about all the controversy which surfaced when Marissa Mayer ended Yahoo’s work from home policy.
People have said this move will truly hurt the company’s ability to retain the best talent, others are now saying that this move is working very well for the company.
So we decided to run our own poll on Polar to ask people what they would do if they worked at Yahoo under such circumstances: Would they quit? Or stay? We got pretty interesting results. The current score is 104 will stick it out and 66 would quit. This tells us that about 38% of the people polled would quit, which is a rather large percentage. An interesting comment on the poll notes that most people might stick it out; however, many would also start looking for a new job.
It’s hard to speculate and hard to say if this was the correct move for Yahoo, time will tell. The question that many articles have been asking is whether or not people are more productive when they work at home. The results from that poll are split right down the line:
So what do all these polls tell us? Well, the short answer is that there isn’t one foolproof approach when it comes to setting a work from home policy. You also can’t generalize and say that everyone who works from home is more productive. In all honesty, the new policy Mayer is putting in place probably has leeway for single parents and emergencies and accommodates special situations which require working from home. It may also be a good solution for the issues and problems facing Yahoo at the given moment. There is no one size fits all solution.
